How to send postcards for free

Well, you have a friend. And a postcard. You wand them to be together, while you are in Stockholm. Okay, so here's the deal: while your glossy card may cost you 3-100 SEK, you can send it for free!

There is the trick that exists for 30 years now, or at least whose who used it before that time never managed to get online and tell the world about their experience.

Put "STS" or "2-FA-BE" instead of a stamp, and it probably will get to its destination. The first abbreviation means "Student to Student", and if you google the second one you'd learn that this is "the 'secret' international travel postcard stamp code".  It will arrive to any country, from any place, but do not go to the post office, put it straight to the post box. And run.

Actually, this is not quite true. As serious people say, these codes mean nothing, and there is no real "student friendly" system. You can write "sorry, can't afford a stamp!" as well, and see if it will get to the place... and there is a big chance it will.

At the same time, some postcards can approach your friend with a circled black 'T' letter stamp on them, which means "postage is due" and he/she would be asked to pay the stamp fee. Of course, the receiver can ignore this message. Of course, usually postal workers feel for students and do not mind to help them with this game, so in the most cases your card will fly for free.

If you want to be on a completely safe/cheap side, find your card near the entrance in a bar or some touristic place, so you won't worry that you lost your money.

But surprisingly, the STS system works it 95% of cases.
Check this FB page for the proof, and Ctrl-F your destination: there is a huge chance it is working there! In Stockholm it works for sure.

  1. STS is a myth / not reality. It's trying to get away with sending mail for free. It is not recognised by the postal system. You may be lucky it's not picked up but then on the other hand the recipient may be charged for the missing postage plus a handling fee.

  3. STS (student to student) sending postcards without any stamps and, instead, writing only "STS" is fake.
